The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has installed manual river gauges in flood-prone communities across Ogun State as part of the Resilience Building through Multi-Stakeholder Engagement in Anticipatory Action (REBUMAA) Project. The initiative is aimed at improving early warning systems and enhancing local capacity to respond to climate-induced disasters.
The gauges, placed along vulnerable riverbanks, are designed to help residents monitor water levels and detect rising flood risks. Community volunteers have been trained to read and interpret the gauges, enabling them to initiate timely responses and alert others in the event of potential flooding.
The REBUMAA Project, supported under the Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) programme, targets high-risk communities in Ogun, Kwara, and Enugu States. In Ogun, the NRCS had also provided over ₦38 million in direct cash assistance to flood victims in Obafemi Owode and Ogun Waterside Local Government Areas.
According to the NRCS, the project includes ongoing vulnerability and capacity assessments to identify additional communities in need of support.
The organization plans to expand the use of manual gauges and integrate them with digital forecasting tools to strengthen community-level disaster preparedness.
The initiative marks a significant step toward building resilience in areas frequently affected by seasonal flooding, and reflects a growing emphasis on anticipatory action in Nigeria’s humanitarian response framework.
